Google reviews are one of the most powerful tools a local business has. They affect your search rankings, they build trust with new customers, and they're completely free. The problem? Most business owners either don't ask for them, or they ask in a way that makes everyone uncomfortable.
§Why Reviews Matter So Much
When someone Googles "plumber near me" or "best tacos in Baytown," Google uses reviews as a major ranking factor. More reviews (and better ratings) mean you show up higher. On top of that, 90% of people read reviews before visiting a business. If you have three reviews from 2021, that's not a great look.
§The Right Way to Ask
Timing is everything. Ask right after you've delivered a great result — right after a project wraps up, right after a happy customer compliments your work. Send a short text or email with a direct link to your Google review page. Don't write them a novel. Just say something like, "Hey, glad you're happy with the work! If you have a sec, a Google review would mean a lot." That's it.
§Make It Stupid Easy
The number one reason people don't leave reviews is because they don't know how. Give them a direct link that takes them straight to the review box. You can generate this link from your Google Business Profile. Put it in your email signature, print it on a card, add a QR code at the register. Remove every possible barrier.
And one more thing — never buy fake reviews. Google is getting better at catching them, and if they flag your listing, you could lose everything. Earn them the honest way. It takes longer, but it actually works.
